The Northern 4A teams are not just playing for seeding now. The winner of the Regional tournament gets the North’s lone berth in the state tournament next week in Las Vegas.

Reno earned the top seed and is going for its sixth straight Region title. The Huskies host Wooster on Tuesday.

Spanish Springs is the No. 2 seed and will host Damonte Ranch in the first round. No. 6 seed Carson is at Galena and No. 5 McQueen plays at Bishop Manogue.

McQueen and Manogue split during the season, each winning on the road.

The Miners are young, with two freshmen and five sophomores, but those

young players, along with some good, veteran leadership have them playing well over the past few weeks. The Miners went 7-3 in their last 10 games.

Freshman Rylan Charles has the team’s highest batting average at .459, and .463 in league games. He also has two saves.

Senior Oliver Shawa has four home runs and drove in 24. He has a .522 slugging percentage.

Fellow senior Mike Davis is batting .391, in all games, and has a slugging percentage of .685.

Davis, who will play at South Mountain Junior College in Arizona in the fall, is also a standout pitcher with 64 strikeouts in 54 2/3 innings and an ERA of 2.43. He went 6-4 on the mound.

Charles and Davis are both left-handed pitchers.

Davis said the Miners are confident, but not taking any game lightly.

“McQueen’s a good team, they’ve got a lot of wins under their belt,” Davis said. “We know they can beat us, and we can beat them, so it will be a good game.”
